Planting at Two Rivers Park – March 2008:
Audubon Arkansas planted 20 acres of seedlings at Two Rivers
Park in Little Rock. Native tree species used include: Cherrybark
Oak, Nutall’s Oak, Overcup Oak, Swamp Chestnut Oak,
Water Oak, Willow Oak, Shumard’s Oak, Pin Oak, Green
Ash, Cypress, Tupelo, and Pecan. These trees will provide
valuable habitat for area wildlife and also serve to educate
the public on native trees.
Update: The first summer is usually
the hardest for newly planted saplings. Though we were afraid
this would be especially true for these seedlings due to their
planting at the very end of the acceptable planting season,
a large majority of the trees appear to have survived. This
is largely due to the fact that we had a very wet and mild
summer this year and the County’s watering and maintenance
of tree planting areas.
Stormwater Demonstration Projects,
2008:
This past winter, Audubon Arkansas in partnership with Julie
Hendrix, began work on a variety of stormwater retention demonstration
projects including building and installing rain barrels and
creating rain gardens. To date, more than 10 rain barrels
and 5 rain gardens have been constructed.
