Internship at Audubon 2005: Marcy Bonewits
What Fourche Creek Could Be...
On
Thursday June 9, 2005 the interns and staff of Audubon Arkansas
floated Fourche Creek. It was perfect weather—warm,
not hot, with little humidity, clear and sunny. We could not
have asked for a better day to float. Fourche creek was more
beautiful that I could ever have expected. I was amazed by
the 300 year old enormous Cypress trees. We saw a mother wood
duck and her twelve ducklings, and a green heron. I believe
that Fourche creek is more picturesque than Buffalo River
and almost nobody knows about Fourche creek being right here
in Little Rock.
If all of Little Rock found out how beautiful
Fourche Creek really is maybe we could all find a way for
the trash to not end up in the creek. For instance we could
begin by making bumper stickers saying Friends of Fourche
Creek, Don’t Litter!
As of right now there is a lot of trash
in Fourche Creek, so much that we had to portage one part
of the creek. However, all of the trash could be gone if we
work together as a community. For instance, schools and community
associations could have major stream team clean ups. Then
they could spread the word through their own neighborhoods.
Signs over Fourche Creek bridges and tributaries could rain
awareness.
In the long run, we need to get literature
out there about Fourche Creek and let people know it exists.
Then we need to let the government in on it, and let them
see that we have a beautiful place for canoeing, fishing,
and wildlife watching right here in the heart of Little Rock.
