Audubon Internship Summer 2007: Sarah Crutchfield

My name is Sarah Crutchfield and I interned with Audubon Arkansas in the education department for approximately ten weeks in the summer of 2007. In addition, I am currently pursuing a bachelor of science degree in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

First I would like to say the opportunity to be a part of this Co-op program and interning at Audubon Arkansas has been an invaluable experience, and has given me a wealth of knowledge and experience I will carry with me throughout the rest of my academic and professional career. Learning and accomplishing tasks has been a major part of my internship, but not compared to the knowledge and experience I have obtained during my time at Audubon Arkansas. The following is a brief summary of a few tasks I have accomplished and learned during this ten week summer internship: 1) learning to create and design a kiosks, 2) creating more professional power point presentations, 3) writing various documents, 4) learning to edit websites, 5) presenting a power point to co-workers, peers, and children, 6) helping organize and execute a day camp, 7) refining my research skills, for example, learning to use google earth software, and 8) assisting others in the office etc…

My greatest accomplishment is to have been a part of helping Audubon Arkansas reach their goals and contribute to their mission statement which is: "To conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity". I am grateful to all those who provided this opportunity to be a part of a Co-op program and becoming an Audubon Intern as well as those who helped me throughout my internship. Overall, in these ten weeks I have worked with the Audubon Arkansas thus far, I have learned more about the real world of biology than I could have ever learned in a classroom environment. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that the skills I have learned with Audubon Arkansas can and will be carried throughout my biology career inside and outside the classroom.

Below is an example of a kiosk I created during my internship:
