Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels
In
the winter of 2007, Audubon Arkansas in partnership with Julie
Hendrix, began work on a variety of stormwater retention demonstration
projects including building and installing rain barrels and
creating rain garden. For the construction of the rain barrels
we began by locating a source for free barrels. We got ours
from a local farmer, but restaurants can also be a good source
for 55-gal plastic drums. After acquiring 9 barrels, we set
to work cutting holes in the tops to allow for water from
gutters to enter the barrel. We then drilled 1" holes
near the bottom of the barrel and installed a faucet to allow
for convenient hose hookup and use of the stored water for
yard and garden irrigation.
We also built six rain gardens that will
store home and yard run-off. One garden will be planted with
fruits and vegetables, while the others will be home to native
wildflowers that should attract numerous butterflies and hummingbirds.
